Just a bunch jerks… after the team that became the target of Don Cherry made their run to the Eastern Conference finals will they be able to rock the league again this season?
Notable Players Out: Calvin de Haan, Patrick Marleau
First Key Game: 10/5/2019 vs. the Washington Capitals
Odds to win the division
5:1 (t-3rd overall) (via Betway)
Is this a bet worth taking?
No, I’d stay away. While the 5:1 odds may seem tempting to be in a division with the Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins nothing is guaranteed. This also doesn’t account for the turn around of the bottom of division members the New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils who have sped up their rebuilds. While I think they will battle for a playoff spot, they may end up just where the odds have them in the third spot.
Keys To The Season
Story to watch
What will be the ramifications of the storm surge? Not the celebration but the down swell of falling short in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Boston Bruins. They also may have to rebound without their captain Justin Williams. Williams announced on September 2nd 2019 that he will not join the team to start the 2019-2020 season.
The other issue may be goaltending; while Petr Mrázek was able to backstop them, he has not been the goaltender that teams have expected. The acquisition of James Reimer may help in that department, but Reimer was unable to supplant Roberto Luongo for the Florida Panthers.
Player to watch
Paging Dougie Hamilton this is your season. On his third team in his young NHL career (Boston Bruins and Calgary Flames prior) Dougie has been the scapegoat on both teams.
The high expectations have never really been met, and with only one year on his contract remaining after this season, he may become available at the deadline for the right price and be on the blue line of his fourth NHL team. With righthanded shots at a premium in the league and cap certainty that accompanies Hamilton, he could be a valuable asset.
Young players to take the next step.
This would include the goaltending as mentioned prior, Dougie Hamilton but also Andrei Svechnikov. Svechnikov the 2018 number two overall pick has been compiling statistics, but it has been predominantly in the penalty box (which has been 60+ in all of his North American leagues) he will need to put points on the board to live up to his draft hype.
If the Carolina Hurricanes were an animal, what would they be?
A Pufferfish. These Hurricanes have the potential to be deadly if they live up to their potential, but they can be sliced up if prepared correctly and eaten like a delicacy.
