7. Mike Hoffman to the Florida Panthers (2018)
I swear I’m not picking on Ottawa fans here. Mike Hoffman had played for the Ottawa Senators since 2011 and for the most part, was well-liked. Bouncing between AHL team Binghampton and the Senators during his first couple of seasons, Hoffman eventually became a mainstay. He found good form during their playoff run in 2017 and looked set for another solid season. Then a massive bombshell would rip through the team.
It emerged that Hoffman’s fiancee had been creating fake accounts on Instagram. Apparently, she had been sending a number of vile and harassing messages to teammate Erik Karlsson‘s wife, Melinda. In these messages were threats of bodily harm on Karlsson and wishing their unborn child dead (this would be made worse by the tragic stillborn death of their child). As a result of these Melinda filed a protective order. Maryk denied the allegations and claimed her social media had been hacked. While these rumours were never confirmed, they still affected Hoffman’s relationship with the team.
On June 19, 2018, Hoffman was traded twice in one day. First, to the San Jose Sharks then he was traded again to the Florida Panthers where would continue to perform solidly before signing with St Louis in 2020. Out of all the trades on this list, this one ranks as the most bizarre and outrageous.
