With the winds of trade being rumored around Erik Karlsson since last season it seems the saga is close to a conclusion… or is it? Last week it seemed as if a deal between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Ottawa Senators would be done and the generational talent would walk the sunny beaches of Florida once more. As the minutes became hours and hours became days NHL fans’ Twitter fingers are getting tired. So lets look at some options.
Possible But Boring
Karlsson stays in Ottawa:
As previously mentioned Erik Karlsson is a generational talent. After seeing former captain Daniel Alfredsson leave the Senators for the Detroit Red Wings, will Pierre Dorion let the face of the franchise leave? With the stories coming out about now Florida Panther Mike Hoffman and his girlfriend causing chaos with the locker room dynamics, Dorion may feel he can roll the dice.
This is a risky possibility, as the New York Islanders just found out with John Tavares. Leaving money (and a year) on the table for a more concrete franchise and the Isles left holding their hands out.
Lone Star Man
Ride west young man… Another team with their iron in the fire are the Dallas Stars. While Karlsson is a star in Ottawa he would not have to be the only star in Dallas. With the fire power up front in the likes of Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin and a goaltender in Ben Bishop, not to mention an old teammate and fellow member of the defense Marc Methot this team should bounce back from the letdown season they are coming off.
Put It All On 65
The Vegas Golden Knights were the darlings of the NHL last year. A buzzsaw through the Western Conference the Knights felt “discarded” by their teams and rode their “misfit” name to the Stanley Cup final where the lost to the Washington Capitals. Karlsson would go a long way in replacing some of the scoring that was lost when James Neal left in free agency.
While their is scoring up front was from all four lines, their defense is lacking a marquee name. And with goaltender Marc-Andre Fluery entering the last year of his contract can they catch that same lightning in a bottle?
Lightning in a bottle? This move would send shock waves through the league, if the Tampa Bay Lightning are able to pair the top two Swedish defenders in the league in Erik Karlsson and Norris winner Victor Hedman this would be the top pair defense in the NHL.
With the Lightning coming up short in the Eastern Conference Final to the Washington Capitals it was expected that Lightning General Manager Steve Yzerman would make minor moves. This would not be minor. This would be adding to the riches Tampa currently holds, while it may cost a kings ransom to get him there if the Lightning are able to keep their young core intact of Hedman, Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov and Andrei Vasilevskiy this would be a league powerhouse for years to come.
While Erik Karlsson and the Ottawa Senators are not certain to be broken beyond repair one thing that is certain is that if/when this trade goes down it will be monumental.
