Minnesota Whitecaps Lift Isobel Cup to Top Amazing Season

The game needed an overtime goal to decide the winner, but on Sunday the Minnesota Wildcaps were crowned Isobel Cup champions.

The hard-fought final saw the league-topping Whitecaps take on the Buffalo Beauts in a game that was live-streamed on twitter. While the Whitecaps capped off their first season in the NWHL in fantastic style, the game was close all the way through.

The first period saw most of the goal-scoring action, Buffalo’s Emily Pfalzer broke the deadlock 17 minutes into the game, with a wrist shot from the point beating Minnesota’s goalie Amanda Leveille. Blake Bolden and Annika Zalewski assisted on the Olympian’s goal.

Buffalo’s lead didn’t hold for long, just 81 seconds later Amy Menke broke away to find the equaliser for the home team. Kendall Coyne Schofield and Lee Stecklein assisted on the goal.

With the game tied at one apiece, the second and third periods were end to end, but couldn’t find any more goals, both teams exchanged minor penalties but regulation time ended with the game tied.

Overtime brought the game winning goal almost immediately. Katie McGovern slipped the puck to Stecklein from the face-off whose shot was too fast and found the back of Nicole Hensley’s net. That was the goal, 49 seconds into overtime, that won the Isobel Cup for the Minnesota Wildcaps.

Congratulations to both teams from everyone here at 4th Line Towers, and thank you for a great game! The Whitecaps have come a long way since their founding in 2004, originally part of the Western Women’s Hockey League, the team continued on their own after the league folded. There were flirtations with the CWHL but nothing came to fruition. Ultimately the NWHL came knocking in 2018 and the Whitecaps became the 5th team to join the league.

The Whitecaps join the Boston Pride (2016), Buffalo Beauts (2017) and Metropolitan Riveters (2018) on the list of teams to win the Isobel Cup.
