After the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 win over Montreal, one fact became clear. Thatcher Demko is the clear first choice in net. His eight straight starts are an indicator that his form is paying off. Particularly as he has won seven of those starts. While Vancouver is in the process of patching this season together, Demko has been a ray of light. This franchise has never handled goalie situations well. Remember the horrific ending of the Cory Schneider/Roberto Luongo fiasco? Then its terrible sequel: Luongo/Eddie Lack! Well, it appears we have another contender in our midst. Embed from Getty Images Canucks fans howled when Jacob MarkstromRead More →

#FireBenning is trending once again, but when hasn’t it been for Vancouver fans? It’s been a bad week for hockey in B.C. and last night’s 5-1 loss in Toronto confirmed the underlying issues. Like so many off-seasons before it, fans called into question the moves made by GM Jim Benning. This team has serious potential, but it appears like this might be another learning year for the Canucks. After a great four-win streak, they are now winless in February. Currently, Vancouver’s record stands at 6-9-0, which in a competitive division might not seem terrible, however, there’s no denying that they lack sharpness and competency atRead More →

Garth Snow and Doug Weight are out of their roles as GM and Coach of the New York Islanders. What does this mean for the team moving forward, especially John Tavares? Ahead of their game against Detroit on Saturday, Washington is having another impressive season. The Capitals are tearing up the Metropolitan Division with a record of 39-11-6. Statistically, this team has been a dream with an 84.5% penalty kill and third highest goals for with 191. Last season’s Vezina winner Braden Holtby has once again been excellent. Washington possesses the lowest goals against in the league with a microscopic 121 (10 less than Minnesota who are 2nd lowest)! Barry Trotz has laid on the spit and polish and his time is shining brightly. Wait a minute, though, haven’t we heard this before? Remember last season’sRead More →

As the start of the regular season edges ever closer; it’s time to make some super-early trophy predictions and today I’ll be looking at the Vezina Trophy. The award, named after former Montreal Canadiens goalie Georges Vezina, is awarded to the best goaltender each season. The winner of the Vezina is decided by all 30 NHL General Managers. Last season LA’s Jonathan Quick, Tampa Bay’s Ben Bishop and Washington’s Braden Holtby were all finalists for the Vezina. But with a career high 48 wins in 66 games, tying Martin Brodeur for most regular season wins, Holtby took the honours. The Finalists Braden Holtby – not becauseRead More →
