It almost seems that every move by Marc Bergevin sets the Montreal Canadiens back 10 years. Big trades have been executed by the fifth-year General Manager, one being historically bad, leaving his team to be the equivalent of the Kansas City Chiefs: good in the regular season but cannot get it done in the playoffs. And when it appeared they were going to be on the brink, it got worse. At this point, the direction of the team, as a result of decisions by Marc Bergevin, should have the Molson family (majority owners) focusing on the next guy as improvement. Welcome back to part 2 of this series. Earlier this week I looked at the biggest over performing goalies, and now it is time to look at the other end of things. Once again we will be using Corsica’s 5v5 goalie stats to judge this. Sv% vs expected Sv%, and goals saved above average (GSAA). We are only looking at goalies with at least 400 minutes of TOI. This is to get rid of crazy outliers. With this all being said let’s jump right into it! 3. Matt Murray Embed from Getty Images The 2-time cup winner has had a rough start to the season. Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin and Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price could easily be two of the best players at their respective positions to never win the National Hockey League’s biggest prize; the Stanley Cup. However, it is at no fault of their own. Let’s first take a look at Ovechkin. The Russian forward was the first overall pick in the 2004 NHL draft. He has been one of the most dominate players in the league netting 1035 points in his 12 year career. Ovechkin has set countless NHL records along with records for the Capitals. Yet, there has always been a thorn in hisRead More →

Everyone’s favourite villain, Gary Bettman, has drawn a line in the sand again. The NHL players will not be going to 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang. For the last few weeks, this debate has been on the cards. Despite the Olympics being about the world’s elite, it’s best won’t be attending. The NHLPA has condemned the decision stating they “adamantly disagree with the NHL’s shortsighted decision.” Embed from Getty Images Every four years the Olympic break is one that has caused frustration to team owners. It also causes a disruption to the crowded regular season schedule. The lack of compensation for players is another big concern.Read More →

As the start of the regular season edges ever closer; it’s time to make some super-early trophy predictions and today I’ll be looking at the Vezina Trophy. The award, named after former Montreal Canadiens goalie Georges Vezina, is awarded to the best goaltender each season. The winner of the Vezina is decided by all 30 NHL General Managers. Last season LA’s Jonathan Quick, Tampa Bay’s Ben Bishop and Washington’s Braden Holtby were all finalists for the Vezina. But with a career high 48 wins in 66 games, tying Martin Brodeur for most regular season wins, Holtby took the honours. The Finalists Braden Holtby – not becauseRead More →
