The Florida Panthers made huge waves last off season landing one of the most prominent UFA’s in goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. The general perception was, despite the high cap hit and lengthy term that, at least for the foreseeable future, the former two time Vezina winner would be a significant upgrade. Like so many things in 2020, they didn’t see this coming… Embed from Getty Images What We Thought: After establishing himself as one of the best in the game with Columbus, and coming off an impressive first round upset over the heavily favoured Lightning, Bobrovsky was a coveted free agent and the Panthers seemed anRead More →

The sun has set in Sunrise. The end of the 2018-19 NHL season marked the retirement of the greatest goalie to ever dawn a Florida Panthers Jersey, sorry John Vanbiesbrouck. The exit of the legendary Roberto Luongo marks the end of an era in Panthers hockey. Embed from Getty Images Luongo ends his career with his name being synonymous with the likes of Brodeur, Roy, and Belfour as the 3rd winningest goalie in NHL history. It’s only appropriate that as he sang his swan song, we take a look at the jersey he wore while doing it. We’ve already looked at the Los Angeles Kings’Read More →

Every season it happens — those woebegone teams who have struggled for seasons on end once again get left behind in the dust of discussions about “contenders.” But every season, it also happens that some of them get good and mad and surprise us all . . . or some of us at least. This season, let’s look at just a few that will bring enough shock and awe to make the post-season or at least come close enough to smell it. In order of surprise by season’s end, let’s go: #1 – Buffalo Sabres People talk about Rasmus Dahlin and Jack Eichel, maybe evenRead More →

Max Domi‘s ‘gutless’ punch on Aaron Ekblad in a preseason game can only mean one thing; fall will soon be here and we can all rejoice at the impending return of the NHL. Here at 4th Line Towers we can’t wait to watch some proper hockey again. This year we’re approaching our previews in a different way; the word count for each team’s preview has been dictated by the number of points that team scored last season. To further mix things up, we’ve divvied up the teams between our writers. Let the Atlantic division preview begin! Our other previews can be found here: Metropolitan Division 2018/19Read More →

Panthers Foolishly Fire Gallant

In a move that would have made Jerry Springer proud, the Florida Panthers have kicked head coach Gerard Gallant to the curb. After the Panthers lost 3-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes, Gallant was literally shown the door to the PNC Arena and was seen unemployed and waiting for a taxi. Assistant coach Mike Kelly was also dismissed. This is a cowardly ignominious move by the Panthers organisation. The Panthers may currently be fifth in the Atlantic division, but we’re 22 games into an 82 game season. Gallant took the team to the playoffs last season with a franchise best 103 points. The guy was aRead More →

Last time we looked into the challenging road trips that the eight teams in the Metropolitan would face this season. And it’s safe to say that the New York Islanders have been well and truly screwed over, that nine-game road trip might just destroy whatever chances the team may have had at the playoffs. Until air-travel became the norm, teams would travel between cities by train. Often in specialised sleeper cars. Roy Conacher‘s departure from the Detroit Red Wings left the number 9 available and it was offered to a young Gordie Howe. Howe accepted the number not because of any historical or personal significance,Read More →
