Thatcher Demko Emerges as Goalie of the Future

After the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 win over Montreal, one fact became clear. Thatcher Demko is the clear first choice in net. His eight straight starts are an indicator that his form is paying off. Particularly as he has won seven of those starts. While Vancouver is in the process of patching this season together, Demko has been a ray of light. This franchise has never handled goalie situations well. Remember the horrific ending of the Cory Schneider/Roberto Luongo fiasco? Then its terrible sequel: Luongo/Eddie Lack! Well, it appears we have another contender in our midst. Embed from Getty Images Canucks fans howled when Jacob MarkstromRead More →

Jim Benning Facing Serious Questions as Canucks Fail to Impress

#FireBenning is trending once again, but when hasn’t it been for Vancouver fans? It’s been a bad week for hockey in B.C. and last night’s 5-1 loss in Toronto confirmed the underlying issues. Like so many off-seasons before it, fans called into question the moves made by GM Jim Benning. This team has serious potential, but it appears like this might be another learning year for the Canucks. After a great four-win streak, they are now winless in February. Currently, Vancouver’s record stands at 6-9-0, which in a competitive division might not seem terrible, however, there’s no denying that they lack sharpness and competency atRead More →

The Pacific Division is always a difficult one to predict at the best of times. This season will be no exception, especially with a shortened season in hand. The winner of this division will be hard to predict as over the last few seasons teams have made key upgrades. Let’s take a look at the contenders in our midst. Anaheim Ducks On The Christmas List: Draft lottery favor The Ducks will be hoping to improve on an underwhelming 6th place in 2019-20. Their off-season acquisitions have been quieter than fans would’ve liked, but let’s not forget they are rebuilding. Kevin Shattenkirk was signed on a 3-yearRead More →

All through this week Canucks fans have been sweating furiously while the Brock Boeser trade rumours swirled. Word on the grapevine according to Matt Sekeres of TSN 1040 in Vancouver was that the Canucks were having cap issues. To free up some room, a potential Boeser trade was apparently on the cards. Jim Benning has dismissed these rumours claiming he has ‘no intention’ of trading one of his stars. He even went further to suggest ‘someone made that up’. Benning on Boeser: "It's hard to find guys that can shoot the puck and score like he can. You can find other pieces as you rebuildRead More →

The Sedins: The 1999 Draft Magic Act

On February 12, 2020, the Vancouver Canucks honor two of their true greats. Henrik and Daniel Sedin were the ultimate unit in the NHL. Identical twin brothers who had an almost telepathic understanding of the other ones play. Describe recently as ‘a cheat code’ they excited Canucks fans for 18 wonderful seasons. As a self-confessed Canucks fan, I cannot express in words what the Sedins mean to this franchise. However, getting them to Vancouver in the first place was a job in itself and for this, we takeRead More →

During their 8-2 home win over LA, the Vancouver Canucks announced Bo Horvat as the Captain. Henrik Sedin and Orland Kurtenbach were present during a special pre-game ceremony to hand the reigns over. Few Canucks fans could argue that this was a smart choice. Since the retirement of Henrik and Daniel Sedin, fans have been waiting for a replacement leader. We tend to forget that Vancouver went all out to get this talent at the 2013 draft, the faith has been rewarded. Although Brock Boeser‘s drawn-out contract negotiation was a troubling sign, this is now sorted and there is hope in Vancouver this season. The Canucks for once have made a splash in the free-agent market. The attack has been strengthened on the wings and the blue line for once has sufficient depth. Last season Elias Pettersson‘s Calder winning efforts were a bright spot in another average year. This season Travis Green hopes put to B.C.’s finest back on the map again and not just play for draft picks. Notable Players In:  J.T. Let’s Just Give Pettersson The Calder

Known as ‘The Scourge Of Colorado’, Elias Pettersson is setting the league alight with his dazzling play. The Vancouver Canucks’ Swedish rookie has 17 points from 11 games and is easily the early favourite for the Calder Trophy despite already missing a few games due to injury. To put Petterson’s achievement into perspective, he’s only the 5th NHL player ever to score 10 goals in his first 10 games. But how does this compare to previous Calder Trophy winners? Since the lockout there have been 10 offensive players who’ve lifted that silverware. At time of writing, Elias has played 11 games, so we’ll set thatRead More →

The new talent hasn’t disappointed so far in 2018-19. The Calder Trophy is normally a good indicator of a young player’s future. So far, there have been several standout candidates. These players are the new lifeblood for their respective franchises and could well spell great things for their future. Drafting these young guns is never straightforward, but these gambles are paying off. Here are three potential Calder Trophy candidates, along with a few honourable mentions: Elias Pettersson (Vancouver Canucks) Embed from Getty Images Until a nasty hit by Mike Matheson caused him to be sidelined with a concussion, this 19-year-old Swede was flying. On Thursday night there wasn’t a dry eye to be seen at Rogers Arena. Henrik and Daniel Sedin are officially retiring from the game. Although Arizona gave the Canucks a hard time- Daniel’s overtime winner sent Vancouver fans into ecstasy. Officially the greatest pair of twins and the highest scoring Swedish duo in NHL history. The only thing that was missing for the Sedins was their names on the cup. DANIEL SEDIN!
